Anguilla in the lesser Antilles
Anguilla is a British territory overseas.
It was part of the crown colony of Saint Christopher-Nevis-Anguilla with St. Kitts and Nevis until 1967.

In 1995 he became an associate member of the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States.
The island is in the Lesser Antilles and has approximately 13,677 inhabitants and the capital (The Valley ) counts 1169 inhabitants.

Géography
Anguilla is an archipelago of 39 sq.mi (102 km²) located north of the island St. Martin. It is also the name of the main island with an area of 37 sq.mi (96 km²) , which owes its name to its elongated shape.

The altitude does not exceed 213 feet (65 meters), peaking at Crocus Hill. Dog Island and Prickly Pear are uninhabited islands with beautiful coral and sandy beaches.
Flights connect the airport to Puerto Rico, Anguilla and St. Maarten (Princess Juliana International Airport) (Airport Philipsburg - Dutch side) St. Martin.

History 

Before the arrival of Europeans the island was called Malliouhana, "arrowhead" by the Arawak Indians. There have left a legacy that dates back at least to the year 600 AD, especially of petroglyphs in a cave called the fountain and the remains of some forty villages. The Arawaks grew cassava, cotton, maize and sweet potatoes. They fished different varieties of fish and shellfish reefs.

Discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1493, who named Anguilla, probably due to its elongated shape, it has been colonized by the British in 1650, a period where they are mostly pirates and buccaneers who populate the island and make a den, identified among the 13 paradises of the brothers of the coast.

In 1648, the Dutch had settled not far away, on the islands of Tortola and Virgin Gorda, which served more as a refuge for pirates Dutch Joost van Dijk remained the most famous being, it gave its name to one of Virgin Islands. All the Dutch were expelled by English buccaneers in 1666.
Around 1680, they are English planters from Anguilla's settled in Tortola, Anegada and Virgin Gorda and. In 1745 and 1796 the island underwent two attempts of invasion by France.

For example, the name of Anguilla and is omitted from the entries of official buildings (such as the Grammar School in St. Kitts common to the three islands) and postage stamps until 1952.

On February 27, 1967, the United Kingdom grant autonomous status to the Associated State of Saint Christopher, Nevis and Anguilla. From the start of negotiations in mid January, Anguilla had disagreed. This expression of disagreement eventually lead to some violence.
May 30 Anguillans are raised, the police chase of Saint Kitts and establish a legislative council. June 16, Anguilla withdrew unilaterally from the Associated State. An association of Canadians, conducted by Leopold Kohr, then professor of economics at Puerto Rico, provides support to Anguilla to create an independent state.

As of September 15, 1969 status Anguilla becomes very blurred.
Theoretically linked to this date the Associated State of Saint Christopher, Nevis and Anguilla who ignores active (from 69, for example, the Defence Force no longer mention that St. Kitts and Nevis in their name), is directly governed via "interim agreement" with the United Kingdom. Only September 19, 1980 Anguilla becomes officially a separate colony of St. Kitts, shortly before the latter's independence September 19, 1983.

April 1, 1982 Anguilla adopts a constitution that makes it a separate British territory. In 1985 Anguilla joining the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States. The constitution is amended May 30, 1990. In 2006, a consultation is underway to develop a constitutional reform.
